Fathers Tend to have Higher Pay than Men Without Kids

There’s a certain report published by the TUC that fathers working full-time get paid a fifth more than men with the same jobs who don’t have children.

The research also shows that those dads who work full-time get, on average, a 21, while those working fathers with two kids earn more 9% as compared to those who have just one.% wage bonus

In contrast, the report says that women who become mothers before 33 typically suffer a 15% pay penalty.

One possible explanation for the wage bonus on men is that those who have children tend to work longer hours and increased their efforts compared to men without children. In contrast to working moms, they are likely to work shorter hours compared to similar women without children, including those in full-time jobs.

Meanwhile, TUC stated that positive discrimination is also another factor for the fatherhood premium. It cited international studies which found that CVs from fathers were more highly favoured compared to those from non-fathers. It implies that employers view dads as more reliable and responsible employees. This is not the same case with the CVs from mothers, as they were marked down against compared to women without children.

Such bias was reflected in a recent poll conducted by the Fawcett Society, which states that public opinion in the UK has this bias, with over a quarter (29%) of respondents stating dads are more committed to their jobs after having a baby while almost half of those who answered (46%) think that women are less committed to their work after becoming parents. It shows much about the current views that men with children are seen as more committed by employers.

These days, men have a more active role in raising their children. However, several of them are afraid to request flexible working or time off in case it damages their career prospects.
