‘Storage Space Issue’: Blamed By the Government for Phoenix System Failure

For some hours the Phoenix pay system that is used by workers in the federal public service was interrupted the day after the minister has given his testimony in the investigation regarding the troubled program before the House of Commons committee.

Anne Trépannier, spokeswoman of the Public Service and Procurement Canada affirmed pay and pension systems are now working well. She said that there was a storage space issue on the computers being used since data was supported on the weekend. She added that the problem was immediately addressed by Shared Services Canada right after identified. Lately in July, the department had restored the ability of employees to see their paystubs a week earlier before payday in Phoenix.

Three months earlier, the centralized payroll system has started to operate in the public service. The federal government received warning from public service unions to reconsider the full launch of the system for it’s not dependable. Then in the month of June, the government admitted that 80,000 people had experienced being underpaid, overpaid or not paid at all. Judy Foote, minister of the Public Services and Procurement has participated with the investigation with the issues in Phoenix. The minister has been questioned by Erin Weir, a critic from NDP public services in the investigation. He pointed out when would the minister take the obligation for the said problem and guarantee that all public employees are paid correctly and appropriately.

On the other hand, Foote reassures the public that the government is committed to a safe, dependable and modern IT system. Now, she is working to make sure that employees get paid for the job they’ve done.
